People suffering from tooth loss have more restorative dental options than ever before. We know that, at first glance, it can be daunting for people to evaluate their tooth replacement options. That is why, today, our Santa Monica dentists are giving you more information about the various restorative technologies available to you.
Traditionally, a person suffering from tooth loss would replace his or her missing teeth with bridges or dentures. A bridge is a small oral appliance that stays in place because it is anchored to adjacent teeth. A denture, on the other hand, is used to replace a full set of missing teeth; in the past, dentures stayed in place due to the fact that the bases of these prostheses fit snugly over the patient’s gum tissue.
Now, however, our dental team is able to permanently anchor dentures in place using small dental implant roots. These roots extend into the patient’s jawbone, and the base of the denture is retrofitted to attach to the titanium implant roots. Once in place, an implant-stabilized denture stays in the patient’s mouth 24/7.
Our team also uses individual dental implants to restore smiles. These stand-alone replacement teeth are used to replace teeth on a one-to-one basis. Every dental implant has a titanium root that extends into jawbone (in the spot where the natural tooth root used to sit). This titanium base is then capped with an abutment and a customized dental crown.
We also use mini dental implants to replace missing teeth; mini implants use the same technology and materials as conventional implants, but the titanium implants are thinner than conventional roots, and thus, during jawbone placement, less traumatic to the bone tissue.
