If you are living with aging dental restorations, you may start to notice some unpleasant aesthetic and oral health consequences. That is why our Santa Monica restorative dentists recommend that patients replace their old crowns in a timely manner. Here are a few indicators that your crown is breaking down…

Discomfort

If you begin to develop pain or sensitivity around your restored tooth, talk to your dental team about scheduling an oral health assessment. Dental discomfort can be a sign that your restoration is no longer protecting the nerves and dental pulp in the center of your tooth. Degraded dental crowns need to be replaced in a timely manner; composite resin bonding can be repaired with additional resin.

Bite Changes

The restorations that we use today are strong and durable, but they are not indestructible. The wear and tear of daily life—foods, beverages, tobacco products, dental grinding, and acidic substances—will affect your restoration over time. If you notice that your dental alignment has shifted, or find that your bite no longer feels even, a failing restoration may be to blame.

Visible Damage

Some patients can visually identify unhealthy restorations because their crowns or natural dental material are discolored. Amalgam fillings, which contain a mixture of metal and mercury, can leak into the surrounding tooth and create a gray/metallic appearance. Poorly fitting composite resin and porcelain restorations can also appear discolored as they accumulate dental debris and plaque.

If you notice any of these changes in your own smile, our Santa Monica crown dentists strongly encourage you to reach out for a professional dental assessment. Your dental team will be able to help you make a plan for restoring oral health!
